About
Gaucin
One
of the famous pueblos blancos of inland Andalucia. Inhabited
since pre Roman times the village is spectacularly situated,
perched on a large rock beneath a ruined 13th century
Moorish castle. The village has breathtaking views over
the surrounding hills and Genal riverbed to the rock
of Gibraltar and the mountains of North Africa beyond. |

What
to see

|
- Gaucin
Castle - The 13th Century Moorish Castillo del
Aguila (Eagle's Castle) is open to visitors most
days and the walk to it passes some of the loveliest
views of the village. The views from the castle
span 360 degrees with fantastic vistas towards Africa
and Gibraltar.
- Church
of San Sebastian – The Church was built
on the foundations of a Moorish mosque, which in
turn was built over an earlier Visigoth place of
worship.
- The
Carmelite Convent – Built in 17th century
the convent has recently undergone some modernisation.
- Fuente
de los 6 canos – Located in the centre
of the village the water fountain was built in 1628,
although rather eroded by time but still a major
focal point at the heart of village life.
- National
Park of Los Alcornocales - Bordering the village
of Gaucín, the park is the largest, oldest
and greatest forest in Europe. 1,092,565 specimens
of cork oaks (alcornoques) and over 250,000 gall
oaks cover 168,661 hectares. It is a remnant of
the great forest that covered the whole of Spain
before they began cutting it down in the 16th century
to provide wood for the sailing ships. Deer, wild
boar, Spanish ibex and a variety of raptors are
among the many fauna native to the forest.
